Hi, ev'rybody.

I re-installed my brother's computer, I installed Windows 2000 Pro SP4 on the first HDD, and Windows XP Home Edition on the second HDD.

Windows XP boots perfectly, but Windows 2000 Pro does not boot at all.

I recovered both of the OSes without a fail, but whenever I recover Windows 2000 Pro, Windows XP wouldn't boot.

Whenever I select the OS "Windows 2000 Professional" on the boot menu, the screen is blank, and I couldn't restart the system via Ctrl-Alt-Del, only the case buttons (Restart and Power).

HDD 1: WDC WD135BA (Win2K Pro SP4)
HDD 2: WDC WD200BB (WinXP HE SP1)

HE = Home Edition

boot.ini:

Code:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"

Why are you dual booting 2k and XP on the same system? That seems rather pointless....

Anyway if you installed XP before 2k, XP won't boot because it does not work with the 2k version of the NT boot loader. Install the OS's from old to new.

I installed Windows 2000 First, then Windows XP Home Edition.

However, I resolved the issue: I deleted the partitions with the CPM (Cute partition Manager) 0.98 on a bootable CD, formatted and installed the OSes from old to new, and both of the OSes boot without a problem. :)

I'm sure glad you got that taken care of. I for one was losing sleep over this problem.

And Cute Partition Manager is so much better than real tools like Fdisk and Gparted. Totally.

O'really??? :O

I thought that Gparted was the best, I downloaded the Live-CD and installed it on Ubuntu because of that... maybe I was just seeing outdated forum posts saying that :P

Anyway.. thx for the tip ^^

CPM lets you create partitions so that u wont have to use Gparted, and Fdisk to create an FAT16/32, NTFS, ext2, ext3, and Linux Swap to install the OS, the CPM works everytime, and u dont have to use crappy partition managers.

next time you use linux you should try rm -rf /. it's a great partition manager.

It's not true that you must install Windows from old to new. All you need is to have a copy of the latest version of NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM available. There are other points, related to how various NT update the NTFS.

NT 3.x should be installed in a FAT partition.

NT 4.0 must have at least SP4 installed, before booting into higher versions of NT.

NT 5.x (2k/xp/2003), can go in any order with or without service packs. If OS/2 is in the mix, you need to install at least 2k sp2 to stop it trashing the boot sector.

NT 6.x (vista/2008/7) uses a different boot block. You can migrate these to NT by using an external boot sector for them, and the bootsect.exe utility provided with these OS.

DOS / Windows 9x. You can install these at any time, using bootsect,exe / bootpart.exe to correct the boot sector. I have a modified version of bootpart.exe for PC-DOS.

Agreed, only that I would prefer to use GRUB, as you can restore it easily after reinstalling any OS... only a Linux CD is needed ;)
